Zoo births

A total of 84 animals were born in 2010 at Lagos Zoo.

White ducks, with 12 ducklings, and dwarf goats, with 10 lids, were the most prolific animals in the zoo last year.

Birds in general were the main contributors to the increase in the number of residents born, with 59 births, while 25 new offspring mammals also came into the world last year.

A spokesman from Lagos Zoo highlighted the births of Trumpeter Hornbill and Von der Decken’s Hornbill, as they are rare birds whose species are severely threatened.

“The birth of these offspring is very important to Lagos Zoo. At the 55 zoological institutions that hold this species, only five recorded births in 2010,” said the spokesman.
