A young woman said to be in her 20s, but later confirmed as aged 16, was killed by a train yesterday (September 1) while walking on the railway between Pedra Mourinha and Aqua shopping centre in Portimão.
The girl was apparently using her phone either to speak to someone or listen to music, say media reports.
An investigation is underway to determine if she was merely distracted and did not notice the Lagos-Portimão train coming, or if she intentionally remained on the railway.
National tabloid Correio da Manhã adds the driver was only able to come to a halt about 200 metres further down the line.
PSP police say the victim did not have identification with her.
Authorities were alerted to the incident at 4.04pm.
The train driver received “psychological support”.
