Paste scientific articles to walls and doors
About a dozen young scientists from the Portuguese movement “Scientist Rebellion” have been near one of the entrances of the ministry of environment, in Lisbon, since just before a quarter to nine this morning, protesting against the inaction of governments on climate change.
Teresa Santos, a biologist, told Lusa (via telephone) that the scientists are near one of the doors of the environment ministry trying “to prevent people from entering”.
They are pasting “several scientific articles onto walls to demonstrating the need for measures to be taken not tomorrow, but yesterday”.
Teresa Santos explained that this action – taking part on the sidelines of the “Stop the Gas” campaign which plans to mount a blocade against natural gas in Sines on Saturday – “is peaceful” and aims to draw attention to what she calls, “the climate chaos.
“The group of scientists that is here today outside the ministry of the environment is claiming the fact that this ministry, the Portuguese State, as well as the rest of the countries, are still hostages of the fossil fuel industries and are unable to take timely measures that truly face the climate crisis”, said Santos.
The Portuguese State continues to invest in fossil fuel structures, “contrary to what science indicates”, she said.
Ms Santos also referred to the cutting down of forests of cork oaks, for example, to install solar projects – which she dubbed “an environmental crime!”
