Young musicians return

news: Young musicians return

Students from the International Music Centre (IMC) recommenced rehearsals at St. Dominic’s School recently. The IMC began in the school back in 1992. Its main purpose was to enable children to experience music making as part of a group, while developing their own technical and musical skills. The centre has now developed into a student orchestra, which meets regularly on Saturday mornings and gives concerts both locally and further afield. The students enjoyed their first tour abroad in April 1998, when they travelled to Rome, Italy.

The first concert away from home was held in the Algarve in 1994. The IMC was represented by a chamber music group, which travelled down to combine their musical skills with students from the Algarve and perform highlights from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. This marked the beginning of a fruitful period of collaboration between students from Lisbon and the Algarve, with students from the south travelling to Lisbon for the first time in October 1995. This tradition of exchange and combined concerts continues today. In fact, the IMC’s most recent tour was to the Algarve in June, when students performed at the International Schools in Porches and São Lourenço. This was followed by a concert at St. Julian’s School, where they were joined by professional musicians from orchestras in Lisbon.
