WHEN WE set the target of 20,000 euros, we felt this was achievable, but our expectations were surpassed – thank you Algarve residents for your generosity and for caring. The people of the Algarve have shown how generous they are and these pages give us the opportunity to bring you up-to-date with reports on events and also allow us space to say thank you. Please remember that these are only events that we know about – we are aware that many societies have made their own donations to help the suffering of those affected by the Asian tsunami.
• On Saturday, January 15 Quinta da Ria Golf started the ball rolling with a sellout golf tournament which raised 6,420 euros. Douglas Moody, men’s Captain at Quinta da Ria, announced that Quinta da Ria had purchased a trophy for each course taking part in the Tsunami Aid Appeal (TAA) golf matches. Winners from TAA tournaments will be invited to take part in an all-winners tournament at Quinta da Ria later this year. Douglas told The Resident that it was important to keep the fundraising initiative going and to recognise the spirit in which so many golfers have given so much.
• The second event, on the same day, was also a sellout. This time it was tennis hosted by Carvoeiro Clube de Ténis and from which all the entry fees were donated to the TAA. Within an hour of us approaching Ronald Henebeke and Graeme Hulme to run a tennis tournament, it was all organised! Other initiatives on the day were the opportunity to purchase vouchers for beauty treatments and the sale of oranges and lemons. Once again, all money raised was put towards the TAA target. The total for the day was 1,417 euros.
• Wednesday, January 19 saw two more golf tournaments – the first, hosted by Boavista Golf in Lagos, was a resounding success with a full field and 4,000 euros being raised. Tony Walton, golf services manager, was very pleased with the event which attracted members and non-members, all of whom contributed to the Tsunami Appeal.
• The event at Pestana Gramacho Golf Course was a smaller event which raised 780 euros.
• On Saturday, January 22 an After Shock Lunch was held at Bar Linda in Meia Praia.Entertainment was provided by the Pink Cadillacs and the sum of 3,471 euros was raised.
TOTAL AT THE END OF THESE EVENTS – A FANTASTIC €18,998!
And so, on to the Grand Auction and Curry
Our second challenge was to find some good prizes for auctioning and this was when we were reminded of the incredible generosity of the business people across Portugal.Prizes came flooding in with little or no coercion from us. From there, things just got better. The Hotel Garbe had already pledged 50 per cent of the ticket price to the appeal, but, on the night, Carlos Simão, General Manager, confirmed that, in fact, the appeal fund would receive 16 euros per ticket sold! Thank you again, Hotel Garbe!
We had many offers of entertainment for the evening and were delighted to be able to accept the offer from the New Orleans Jazz Band and the dance troupe Just For You. Time did not permit us to accept offers from Music 2 You and Presumed Innocent, but we were most grateful that they had thought of the appeal. At the evening, we were pleased to be joined by the British Consul to the Algarve, Mr. Roger Nuttall.
The venue was a resounding success with excellent food, great entertainment and, of course, the huge auction. Auctioneer for the evening, Sheena Rawcliffe, had her work cut out to sell 86 items in two hours and keep those present entertained. She and her team were more than satisfied with the result, with only two items remaining unsold.
Needless to say, there were highlights of the evening’s auction. One was a ‘Slave for a Day’ – Jason Horner of 125 Removals offered his services for a day (cleaning, cooking, gardening…whatever). Sheena was the lucky winner and will be reporting on Jason’s activities in a future edition of The Resident!
An E Class Mercedes also kept a few bidders on the edge of their seats. This item, donated by C Santos of Faro, was in fact a beautifully crafted model – but it was a great talking point before and after the event. In the true spirit of generosity and giving, it was noted that competitors were bidding for one another’s products. Weekends in Lisbon and fantastic golf opportunities kept the money pouring in and, as the hammer came down on the final lot, it was announced that €12,020 had been raised by the auction alone!
Sheena was extremely happy with the outcome. “Individuals and companies have been exceedingly generous and innovative throughout the Tsunami Aid Appeal’s 10 days,” she said. “One company, Elite Kitchens in Lagoa, decided that rather than donate just one item to the auction, they would contact their major suppliers and ask for donations. They were very successful with items donated by all their Portuguese suppliers (see this page).Angela Schulz-Henke had the great idea of selling a neighbour’s oranges and lemons at the Carvoeiro Clube de Ténis event, so money was raised from the sale of fruit which may otherwise have been wasted. And, of course, Jason’s offer to be a slave for a day – another great initiative! Everything that has been done has been done for the right reason – giving from the heart to make a difference to the lives of those affected by the Asian tsunami.”
Sheena finished by saying that no one had sought publicity or acknowledgement for what they had done towards the appeal. However, the opportunity is here so we will use it.
– Dave Leeke of Dynafish who gave his time freely to build the tsunami web page and attached auction page, making it possible for people to bid via the Internet
– International School of the Algarve for the free loan of staging equipment
– Golf for Greys for their assistance with arranging the golf events
– The Hotel Garbe for allowing us to hold the event there, and allowing us to cause chaos to their normal schedule in the process. And also to the waiting staff who were exemplary
– To KISS FM for free radio time to publicise the event
– To everyone who bought tickets for the event and to everyone who purchased items on the night
– To those people who made donations to the fund
– And last, but not least, to the team of workers on Friday night
