Years after school stabbing horror in Massamá, school janitor demands €100,000 in damages

Eighteen months after 15-year-old Gonçalo A. entered his school in Massamá, stabbing three pupils and a 58-year-old school janitor, the latter – Nazaré Lopes – is claiming €100,000 in ‘moral damages’ from both her assailant and the school’s principal, who she accuses of “failings over adequate vigilance”.

Lopes told newspapers how she thought she was going to die after she was stabbed, as there was “so much blood”.

The incident, at the Stuart Carvalhais secondary school, just outside Lisbon, took place in October 2013 and saw the otherwise “quiet” student Gonçalo A. sent to a detention centre for two-and-a-half years.

According to news reports, his sentence is due to be reviewed in May.
