Wyndham Grand Algarve to host charity exhibition

Wyndham Grand Algarve in Quinta do Lago is preparing to host an art exhibition on Thursday, June 2, featuring the works of renowned British artist Jessica Dunn.

The event will also aim to raise funds for two charities in the Algarve.

Entitled ‘Wanderings’, the event will see the artist’s paintings exhibited throughout the hotel, from its entrance hall and corridors to its bar. The goal is to provide an “immersive experience” by allowing visitors to “wander through the hotel” whilst discovering the magnificent artworks on display.

As Wyndham Grand Algarve describes it, “a stunning collection of abstract landscapes will take you on a vibrant journey through the palette of the Algarve landscape.”

The 25 paintings displayed will be available for purchase, with 10% of all sales going to the two charity organisations.

Some of the paintings will also be exhibited in the newly refurbished residences – a collection of five-star serviced apartments, ranging from one- to two-bedroom and three-bedroom penthouses, which are available for purchase.

An auction will also be held for one particular painting, which Jessica Dunn has donated to the cause, with the entirety of the proceeds going to these charities. The ‘After the Storm’ acrylic painting (80cmx80cm) has a current trade value of €1,550, but the starting bid will begin at €500.

Admission will be free. The event will run from 6pm to 8pm, with the live auction scheduled for 7pm. The paintings will remain on display until June 30.

Also planned is a prize draw for guests: first-place winners will receive a two-night stay at Wyndham Grand Algarve, second a dinner at Dourado restaurant and third a free treatment at the hotel spa.

Worthy charities

Two worthy charities in the Algarve were selected to be the beneficiaries of this event – APEXA, an association supporting special needs people; and Existir, which helps people with disabilities and as well as individuals and families struggling financially and socially.

Each charity develops several projects aimed at improving the lives of those in need.

RIA (Rehabilitating and Intervening in Autism) is an initiative developed by APEXA that aims to assist the development of children and teenagers with autism, helping them understand social contexts, minimise aggressive behaviours and control impulses, thus contributing to the development of their personal autonomy. APEXA is currently in need of funding to help purchase tables, chairs and didactic material for this particular cause.

LACUS is another project carried out by APEXA that aims to develop sensory and motor skills through equine therapy, as well as help fight social exclusion among people with disabilities by guiding them through day-to-day tasks like mailing a letter or going shopping.

Meanwhile, EXISTIR assists nearly 150 people with disabilities and provides food support to around 400. Despite being based in Loulé, it also helps people in neighbouring boroughs such as Silves, Faro, São Brás, Olhão and Tavira.

Last year, the charity joined the national ‘Sopa para Todos’ (Soup for All) movement, which allows anyone to buy a soup at a partnering restaurant which can be consumed by anyone in need for free.

About the artist

Jessica Dunn was born in London in 1963 to renowned actors Priscilla Morgan and Clive Dunn (best known for his role as Lance Corporal Jones in the hugely popular BBC sitcom ‘Dad’s Army’). Her early life was surrounded with creativity, having grown up in an artistic environment fuelled by her father, who was also an eager amateur portrait artist.

After her art foundation at Kingston Polytechnic, she continued drawing, painting and printmaking, which then led her to the Algarve in Portugal, where she joined a design company and gained a passion for abstract impression of land, sea and sky, inspired by this region.

Jessica has her own studio in Boliqueime and has been exhibiting her work for over 20 years, throughout Portugal, the UK as well as Italy, having been featured in the Wall Street Journal online and Hello magazine.
