It could have been taken out of a Hollywood film, but the scene created by a 49-year-old woman during a wrong-way car chase in Esposende yesterday (January 14) was anything but.
The woman, a Porto resident, drove on the wrong side of the road for 15 kilometres outside of Esposende and crashed into three police cars before being arrested.
If it hadn’t been for the GNR police’s swift action, chasing after the car and blocking the road, the incident could have had a tragic ending.
The woman was first detected in the area of Marinhas, where a police car had to swerve to avoid a collision.
The woman then attempted to flee, driving onto the EN13 road towards Esposende and committing a number of driving offences along the way as police fired warning shots.
The car chase only ended when the woman crashed into the police cars in a roadblock near Apúlia. Two police vehicles were written off but no injuries were suffered by the officers who literally had to jump out of the way.
The woman, who suffered only minor injuries, was taken to Porto’s Hospital Magalhães Lemos, where a psychiatric assessment will likely be carried out. The reasons behind the woman’s rampage have not been revealed.
