World’s spiciest cocktail started life in Algarve

When Jon Wright visited his father in the Algarve four years ago, little was he to know that it would be the start of an adventure to create the world’s hottest cocktail.

Jon is Events Manager for the fashionable and lively Vibe Bar and Exhibition Centre in the Old Truman’s Brewery in London’s Brick Lane. Introduced by his father to the world of piri-piri and medronho, the germ of an idea has now turned into reality.

The Brick Lane Burner Cocktail was recently launched on an unsuspecting public! This drink is so powerful that it comes with a medical disclaimer. The Vibe Bar, working with mixologists, chemists and chilli horticulturalists, has created the world’s spiciest ever cocktail, setting a new Guinness World Record in the process.

This isn’t merely the spiciest cocktail ever made – when tested by Warwick University it came in at 676,979 Scoville Heat Units (SHU) – but also the spiciest commercially available drink ever – more than 270 times hotter than Tabasco sauce and over 20 times as hot as your standard Vindaloo.

The Brick Lane Burner, which sells for €20, is part of a new, spice themed cocktail range which requires brave punters to don a pair of goggles and sign a medical disclaimer before being allowed to drink it.

Thoughtfully, the Vibe Bar provides  a complimentary Mango Lassi cooler to anyone daring enough to try it. Made with ingredients sourced from Peter Seymour, chilli horticulturalist and owner of the Brighton based retailer Chilli Pepper Pete, the drink uses 12,000,000 SHU ‘Killer, Killer’ extract which is more than eight times hotter than the hottest chilli in the world.

It’s so potent that those who handle it must wear protective gloves. This is then added to bourbon, ginger ale and lime, mixed over ice and decorated with various chillies, including a ‘Ghost Pepper’ Bhut Jolokia Chilli, which can reach up to 1,001,304 SHU.

Jon Wright said: “Brick Lane has always been known as the home of hot food in London and, in the year that the world’s eyes are on us, we wanted to celebrate that.

“We’ve made sure that even if you don’t want to go for a meal, you can still have the Brick Lane experience here at the Vibe Bar. Though I’ll be honest – The Burner is probably too hot for all but the bravest! It would be great if the cocktail could also become a hot hit in the Algarve.”
