WYD: Pilgrims participate in the World Youth Day
Expectations over the economic effects of World Youth Day ran extremely high in the run up to the event last summer that saw hundreds of thousands arrive to celebrate what is the Roman Catholic Church's 'largest youth event', scheduled to take place every three years Photo: ANTONIO COTRIM/LUSA

World Youth Day hotel occupancy “well below expectations”

The hotel occupancy rate in Lisbon during World Youth Day (WYD) was 77 per cent, “well below” the 91 per cent estimated in June, according to a survey by the Hotel Association of Portugal (AHP), released today. “The occupancy rate was well below expectations,” said AHP CEO Cristina Siza Vieira at the press presentation of the “World Youth Day 2023 – Impact on Hospitality” survey, which took place online. According to the survey, hoteliers in the Lisbon area initially estimated that occupancy rate could reach 89%, while within the city of Lisbon expectations were that the rate would reach 91% during WYD week (at the beginning of August).
