The winning photographs of the 2023 journalism and documentary photography competition will be on show at Portimão’s Antiga Lota between July 27 and August 16.
The World Press Photo Exhibition is coming to Portimão this summer. The annual exhibition, which will be on show at Portimão Antiga Lota (Old Fish Market) between July 27 and August 16, showcases the best and most important photojournalism and documentary photography of the previous year.
Representing the most relevant news and important moments neglected or forgotten by the mainstream media in 2022, the winning works of the 2023 World Press Photo Contest draw attention to some of the most pressing issues faced in the world today – from devastating documentation of the war in Ukraine and historic protests in Iran to the realities of Taliban-controlled Afghanistan and the many faces of the climate crisis in countries ranging from Morocco to Australia, Peru to Kazakhstan.
Last year, the World Press Photo Foundation implemented a regional strategy to offer a geographical balance of more global and better perspectives, changing the annual contest’s configuration and jury selection criteria.
The 24 regional winners and six honourable mentions – spanning stories from the front lines of conflict, culture, identity, migration, memories of the lost past and glimpses of futures near and far – were selected by an independent jury from over 60,000 entries by 3,752 photographers from 127 countries.
Among these, the jury of the 2023 contest selected four global winners:
