Sports fans will be in for a treat next month as Portimão – entering the last stretch of its run as a European City of Sport in 2019 – will host several world-class sports events.
Among the highlights are the FIM Superbike World Championship (September 5-8), the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup (September 6-8) and the Portugal Open (September 12-15).
The Superbike World Championship is returning to the Portimão International Racetrack, once again bringing some of the world’s best riders to the Algarve. The championship is one of the world’s main motorsport road racing series.
At the same time, Portimão Arena will host the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup, which will see the best gymnasts from 34 countries competing at the Portimão Arena.
Lastly, the Morgado do Reguengo golf course will be the venue for the prestigious Portugal Open golf competition which every year establishes itself more and more as a top sports event.
Other highlights include R10 Street Futsal, a street futsal competition organised by the world’s perennial best player Ricardinho, which will be held in Portimão between September 4 and 8, and The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, which will see over 700 sailors stopping off in Portimão between September 8 and 15 at the local marina.
Also certain to attract scores of sports lovers are the Elite Cup, a friendly field hockey competition which attracts some of Portugal’s best teams and will be held at the Portimão Arena from September 20 to 22, and the Aquabike European Championship, which will include a stage at the Portimão Marina beach and the Portimão riverside between September 27 and 29.
