World champion gymnasts in Portimão

Portimão’s municipal arena will be hosting a stage of the World Rhythmic Gymnastics championship, for the fifth year running.

Around 350 gymnasts from 30 countries will take part in the four days of competitions between March 11 and 14, which will also include Portimão’s 24th international junior’s tournament.

Throughout the event, gymnasts will manipulate the five apparatus of rhythmic gymnastics: the rope, ribbon, ball, clubs and hoop.

Among the athletes taking part will be the Russian Olympic champion Eugenia Kanaeva and her fellow countrywoman Daria Kondakova.

Spectators are welcome to watch the competitions for free, with the first event due to start at 5.30pm on March 11, followed by the opening ceremony at 9pm.

On March 12, gymnasts will compete from 1.30pm until 10pm, on March 13 from 1.15pm until 10.45pm and on the final day from 3.15pm until 8pm.
