A man said to be “around 55 years old” died in a work accident at the construction site of IKEA’s mega complex in Loulé.
The accident happened last Thursday evening when a forklift overturned and pinned the man to the ground until firefighters arrived to free him, says national tabloid Correio da Manhã.
Emergency services were able to get the man’s pulse back but he died on the way to Faro Hospital, CM adds.
IKEA lamented the death in statement, saying that “the construction of the store respects all the highest security standards and all the legal procedures and norms”.
CM says the accident is under investigation by the Portuguese authority for work conditions (ACT).
The IKEA complex is scheduled to open next spring.
