Wonderful sculptures

SEVEN WONDERS of the world and of Portugal will be this year’s theme at the international sand sculpture festival, FIESA 2007, in Pêra, due to open on June 7.

During May, 30,000 tonnes of sand will be shaped by around 30 sculptors from all over the world, to create what promises to be another fascinating exhibition area of 15,000sqm.

Throughout the summer, musical and dance performances will be held there, including demonstrations from the national Capoeira association (Brazilian dance fighting) and percussion orchestras.

Created in 2003, it gained notoriety as one of the best sand sculpture exhibitions in the world and the organisers, ProSandArt, expect 170,000 visitors this year.

The exhibition will be open from 10am until midnight every day from June 7 until October 7. Entrance is priced at seven euros for adults, four euros for children between the age of six and 12 and free for children under five.
