Women in the Roman Empire

Athens-born Dr. Rita Roussos, a classical art historian, will be presenting a lecture on ‘The Proud and Pure Women of Republican Rome and the Fallen Women of the Empire’ at two venues in the Algarve on June 2.

Emperor Augustus claimed that the moral decay of the later Roman Republic was especially due to Roman women who had forsaken their traditional role of “housekeeper”.

The first lecture of the day will be held at São Brás Museum at 2.30pm, followed by another at Lagoa library at 6pm.

Organised by the Algarve Archaeological Association (AAA), the presentations will be given in English. There will be a charge of €6 for non members. Money raised goes towards archaeology grants and speakers.
