Woman killed by Bragança rescue services chief

Portuguese authorities are investigating the death of a 53-year-old woman run down on Sunday afternoon by the chief of Bragança’s “Operações de Socorro” rescue service. What they hope to discover is whether or not Ana Antunes was on the pavement when she was run over.

João Afonso, district commander, tried to revive the woman after the accident, reports national tabloid Correio da Manhã.

But there may be few witnesses to what happened.

“She left the house at around 2pm,” husband Eduardo Pinto told the paper. “I didn’t know a thing until the driver of the car came to call us.”

“He was in panic,” added Pinto’s mother.

Ana Antunes was run down in Avenida da Zamora, in the small town of Vimioso.
