A Faro woman died and two other people were “seriously injured” following a violent accident in the early hours of Saturday morning (July 18) on the EN125/10 road near the Faro bike rally.
GNR police are investigating but it is believed 24-year-old Ana Sofia Brazona tried to cross the road in an area that had “poor lighting” when an oncoming bike drove right into her. She died on the spot, while the two people travelling on the bike – a man and a woman aged 23 and 22 – were sent flying several metres. They were rushed to Faro Hospital where they are still being treated.
Lieutenant-Colonel José Palhau said police are investigating what led Ana Sofia to apparently ignore a nearby pedestrian bridge that would have given her safe passage over the road.
He explained that the two-lane highway which links Faro to the airport has “poor visibility, especially at night”.
Ana Sofia is understood to have been making her way from a night out at the bike festival, while the two bikers were Portuguese from Almodôvar on their way to the last day of the event.
