In this blackest of years for domestic violence in Portugal, yet another woman was found dead this morning after her estranged partner called police to say: “I have killed my wife.”
With statistics almost off the page this year – the habitual average of four women killed by partners or former partners every month exceeded in January in just one blood-spattered week – today’s killing was called in at 11 this morning from the Charneca da Caparica district of Almada, just outside Lisbon.
A police source has told Lusa news agency: “The woman was asphyxiated. We don’t know the motives for the crime. It is being investigated, but the two people involved were in the process of divorce”.
