Winemaking vocational course to open in Lagoa school

The Algarve may soon boast a new generation of wine producers, as a new viticulture and oenology vocational course has been officially presented by Lagoa’s Escola Secundária Padre António Martins de Oliveira for its coming school year.
The aim is to produce highly qualified young labour to bolster the winemaking sector in the Algarve.
The course was officially presented on May 27 at Lagoa’s municipal auditorium, after a group of students were taken on field trips to wineries in Lagoa, Silves and Albufeira with hopes of piquing their interest in the industry.
Wineries visited were Quinta dos Vales, Quinta do Barranco Longo, Quinta da Vinha, Quinta do Francês and Quinta do Miradouro.
Later that afternoon, the course was discussed at the auditorium. In attendance were representatives from the Algarve tourism board, the Institute for Employment and Professional Training, the Municipality of Lagoa, the Commission for Regional Coordination and Development (CCDR-Algarve) and a number of regional wine producers.
The opinion of all present was unanimous: “The course will further boost a sector that has grown steadily over the past few years and which serves as an alternative tourist attraction in the Algarve.”
