Wine society members taste Campolargo wines

By Larry Hampton [email protected]

Campolargo is a family-owned, award-winning winery that first started production in the Bairrada region in the 1920s.

Nowadays, the business lies in the hands of the third generation with Jorge Campolargo responsible for the vineyards and Carlos Campolargo heading the cellar and sales, while Carlos’ daughter Joana represents the fourth generation, providing administrative support and external relations.

Carlos Campolargo gave a tasting of nine of his wines on December 7 at the Orangerie restaurant at Vila Monte to 73 members of the Algarve Wine Society and their guests.

Four of these wines were tasted in a room beneath the picturesque terrace and the remainder during a memorable five-course Christmas lunch.

Carlos is rightly enthusiastic about his wines, using grapes as varied as Pinot Noir and Castelão Nacional, now a rarity in vineyard production. Society members were able to appreciate the quality of the wines that Carlos had selected to accompany the lunch and orders were taken after the meal by Silvio da Encarnação of Algarwine Lda.

The Orangerie is located in the Vila Monte golf and spa resort on the outskirts of Moncarapacho. In a room overlooking the sea and the peaceful scenery of the Algarve countryside, Executive Chef Albano, with assistance of Chef Daniel, produced a wonderful Christmas lunch that included carrot soup with spinach, smoked chicken breast salad, fillet of sea bass, sorbet, roast guinea fowl and a symphony of desserts accompanied by Espumante Borga – a tradition in the Bairrada. Head waiter Paulo Santos and André Simões led a team that provided immaculate service. Resident Manager Carla Costa oversaw a fantastic occasion that left all the guests happy and contented.

The Algarve Wine Society will commence its calendar for the first half of 2013 with a tasting of Quinta da Bacalhôa wines, followed by dinner at the Dona Filipa Hotel on January 16.
