Wine society holds AGM and gala dinner

THE ALGARVE Wine Society held its annual general meeting recently, followed by a champagne reception and a black tie gala dinner, at the Vila Vita Parc Hotel in Porches.

The meeting was conducted by the President of the Assembleia Geral, Mike Behennah, and attended by 85 of the organisation’s 158 members. A number of interim appointments, which had been made during 2004, were announced and unanimously confirmed.

A champagne reception followed with a five-course gala dinner, complemented by a white verdejo from Rueda in Spain and a fine 2001 Terra da Zambujeira red. The evening was rounded off with an excellent Quinta do Vale da Figueira 10-year-old port.

The Algarve Wine Society has a full programme of events for this year, including a wine tasting and dinner on April 20, at the Hotel Garbe in Armação de Pêra, followed by two midday master classes on April 21 and 22, conducted by UK wine expert, Jon Hurley, trips to Vidigueira and Portalegre in the Alentejo, the annual summer party, a trip to the Douro and Porto in September and an extended trip to New Zealand in November.
