THE ALGARVE Wine Society celebrated the arrival of summer, and the close of its successful spring calendar, by throwing a Summer Party on the evening of July 2. The venue was the Clubhouse of Alto Golf in Alvor, with its beautiful views of the 18th green and, in the distance, the Monchique range of mountains.
Buffet tables were loaded with different kinds of salads, and the main Alto kitchen was steadily cooking everything from steaks, ribs, lamb chops and sausages, to salmon and other mouth-watering delicacies. The wines were excellent and plentiful, and the meal was rounded off with a cheese and dessert buffet.
A very spirited raffle, offering a large number of wine bottles, brought the usual winner’s cheers and loser’s good-natured groans of frustration. Live music was provided by the well-known singer, Ilze van Zanten, who sang throughout the evening, while members took to the floor and danced.
The Algarve Wine Society now heads into its usual summer break before commencing its full slate of autumn events, including a week-long trip for 35 members to the scenic Veneto and Friuli wine regions of north-eastern Italy from September 3 to 9, starting and finishing in Venice, a tasting of red Portuguese wines in October, a three-day, two-night trip to a Portuguese wine producing area in November, and traditional Christmas lunch on Wednesday, December 13 at the Amadeus restaurant in Almancil.
