THE ALGARVE Wine Society celebrated the drawing to a close of this year’s long, hot summer by throwing a Summer Party recently.
Marlen Schmid, owner and manager of O Alambique in Poço Barreto (Silves), hosted the event that attracted over 55 members and their guests to the outdoor terrace of the well known restaurant.
Buffet tables were loaded with salads, there was a huge outdoor grill steadily cooking everything from steaks to ribs, hamburgers, sausages and a variety of seafood, and there was plenty of wine as might be expected. The meal was rounded off with a memorable cheese and dessert buffet.
A very spirited raffle brought the usual winners’ cheers and losers’ good natured groans of frustration. Live music provided by the international French singer, Myriam Marie, and her accompanist Rui played throughout and those members still mobile after their wonderful repast danced the evening away.
The Algarve Wine Society now heads into its usual autumn events, including an outstanding trip to the Douro and Porto from September 17 to 21, led by Erla Walther and featuring visits to a number of port and Douro wine producers, and highlighted by a formal gala dinner at the Factory House in Porto; a tasting of better red Portuguese wines conducted by Mike Behennah at Browns in Vilamoura on October 21; a long anticipated trip to New Zealand led by Michael Berger in early November; and the traditional lunch hosted by Father Christmas at the Sheraton on December 15.
