Wine: Quinta de Lemos Dona Santana 2012

As a die-hard Dão fan, I am always on the lookout for something different and this one, Quinta de Lemos Dona Santana 2012, recently appeared on the shelves at Apolónia (€19.95).

Whilst many of the best wines coming out of Dão these days are in a lighter style, this is a “big” yet fresh and elegant wine.

The producer also scores points in my book for having held back this 2012 vintage until it is well and truly ready for drinking, but, at over 10 years old, this wine clearly has a lot longer to go.

In the glass, it is deep and dark with notes of tobacco and spices coming to the front on the nose along with mature berry fruit. Good acidity and firm tannins lend freshness in the mouth leading to a long and very dry finish. Outstanding, and well worth the money.
