Wine: Château L’Escarelle

New in from Provence

There is nothing new about Château L’Escarelle, a well-established, organically certified producer in the heart of France’s Provence wine region. But these two pinks are totally new to the Algarve and should be soon making their way to restaurant wine lists and the shelves of good supermarkets.

The wine is new to the portfolio of Algarve-based wine distributors and importers Prime Wine and, for now, it can be purchased directly from them at their warehouse showroom near Loulé. These are high-quality rosés with a very friendly price tag of around €11 for their standard Château L’Escarelle label and €15 for their mid-range Château L’Escarelle Les Deux Anges (meaning ‘The Two Angels’).

I had to wonder if this branding is intentionally resonant of the most famous of all Provence pinks, Whispering Angel, but what I can confirm is that, costing a good few euros less, it is, without doubt, a superior wine.

The lower priced of the two, however, may well prove to be the most popular for those looking to enjoy a nice dry Provence pink on the pool terrace this coming summer. This wine is a very pale shade of pink with delicate floral notes and strawberry notes.

The Deux Anges is a little more complex with red and citrus fruit on the nose and a nice smoothness in the mouth; also good for a sunny afternoon, but a wine with enough structure and character to be enjoyed with food.
