Wine bar launches new concept in Portugal

An evening of wine tasting and tapas was enjoyed by many to launch the newly refurbished wine bar at the Hugo Beaty Bar and Cafe in Praia da Luz.

The Grape Escape featured an array of delicious Portuguese wines for the guests to sample at the plush new wine bar at Oceânico’s Estrela da Luz resort.

There were numerous bottles of red and white wines for guests to sample at just the press of a button using a card that can be topped up with credit so guests can freely experience different varieties of wine.

Partner in Oceânico, Simon Burgess, saw the unique concept when visiting a bar in California.

“After visiting the bar in California, I found out the name of the company, Enomatic, which created this new concept of wine tasting. I knew then that this is what the new wine bar should be,” he said.

The Grape Escape is now open to the public every night and the choice of wines available will vary.

However, co-partner in Oceânico, Gerry Fagin, insists on keeping all of the wine Portuguese.

“We want to get our guests interested and more familiar with Portuguese wine. As Portuguese wine is not well exported, people are not aware of the amount of amazing wine this country has to offer. We want to educate guests and for them to become more confident in their choice of wine,” he said.

The bar will also offer a takeaway service so if guests find a wine they enjoy they will be able to take cases home to England or to enjoy in the comfort of their villa or apartment.

“In this economic climate, we wanted to create something new, fun and affordable in Praia da Luz. We also want to promote Portuguese wine which is only now slowly getting the recognition it deserves.”
