The wines of Júlio Bastos under the Dona Maria label of his estate just outside the northern Alentejo city of Estremoz are good without exception.
The rosé is always a pleasure to drink and their Amantis red, with its upfront fruit and spiciness, is a great steak wine.
A new release, which has just arrived on the shelves at Apolónia (€19.95), is this 2019 white made from the Arinto grape. It is interesting that the wine has only now been released, but it makes a lot of sense as this is clearly designed to be aged in the bottle.
The wine has been fermented and aged on the lees followed by some time in oak, resulting in a white with real body and an intense nose with aromas of peach and candied citrus fruits. Creamy and textured in the mouth, there is great acidy and layers of flavour that will no doubt become all the more interesting with further ageing.
