Wind, rain, churning seas and snow… 15 districts on yellow alert

From Faro to Viana do Castelo, 15 districts are on yellow alert for the next 24-hours at least while forecasts predict strong winds, rain, 4-5 metre waves and, in some areas, snowfall.

The southwesterly winds could reach gusts of 80 km/ hour (100 km/ hour on high ground) say meteorologists at IPMA, the Portuguese institute of sea and atmosphere, while rain could turn to hail in Bragança, Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga.

The worst of the rain is due to start falling before dawn (around 3am) tomorrow (Friday), with snow likely in Guarda, Viseu and Vila Real pretty much for the whole day.

But while temperatures are dropping everywhere, the Algarve’s are likely to remain at around 20ºC, while Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra will be lucky to get 13º, Viseu Guarda and Portalegre 12º and Guarda a dismal 5ºC.
