GOLDFRAPP ARE going to perform at the Festival Sudoeste TMN 2008. The festival takes place at Zambujeira do Mar from June 7 to 10.
Known for their contribution to electronic dance music, Goldfrapp has become particularly well known for their unique visual theatrics.
Named after lead singer Alison Goldfrapp, the band got together in 1999 after Alison and composer Will Gregory enjoyed working together on a demo he was recording for a film soundtrack. The demo, incidentally, was never completed.
Goldfrapp’s debut album, Felt Mountain, was released in September 2000 and was influenced by a number of different genres, including cabaret, folk and electronic music. Having been well received by the critics and reached number 57 in the UK album chart, the album went on to be certified gold before being shortlisted for the Mercury Prize in 2001.
Black Cherry, the band’s second album, was released in 2003 to more acclaim, reaching number 19 in the UK album charts and number four on the Billboard Top Electronic Albums chart. It also reached platinum status in the UK. Critics described the album as ‘being an unexpected delight’. The following year the album’s song, Strict Machine, won a prestigious Ivor Novello award for best dance single.
Goldfrapp’s third album, Supernature, was released in 2005 and went straight in at number two on the UK album charts, selling 52,000 copies in its first week. Worldwide it has gone on to sell over a million copies and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Electronic / Dance album in 2007. The album’s lead single, Ooh La La was the band’s first ever single to reach the top five in the UK singles chart.
Their fourth album, Seventh Tree, was released in February of this year and entered the UK album chart at number two. Moving away from their usual dance electronic sound, the new album features more laidback ambient tunes. Their first two single releases, A&E and Happiness, reached number ten and number 25 respectively, in the UK. Their third single, Caravan Girl, is due to be released on June 30 and is sure to continue the band’s spiralling success.
