West End meets Lagos

REVIEW BY SIMONE AND PETER HEAD

On April 27, I was extremely fortunate to witness the spectacular dance show by the Associação de Dança de Lagos (ADL) at the Cultural Centre of Lagos.

It was the first time I had seen these talented dancers, but will not be the last. I had been told of the school’s recent success in the Faro competition Dançarte that resulted in qualification for the World Dance Cup in Austria (see Algarve Resident issue of April 13) and wished to support the association with their fundraising efforts to send the team to Austria to represent Portugal.

This show was to celebrate the International Day of Dance and indeed presented us with a selection of choreographies from the shores of  the Aegean to the glitz of Bollywood, from the smouldering heat of Spain to the frozen mountains of Georgia, and with glittering performances of classical ballet and comic polkas from Finland.

The colours and costumes, the exuberance and energy, the precision and professionalism of these ballet dancers, some as young as five, was so much more than I could ever imagined. Congratulations to everyone taking part and to the teachers for such training.

From the start to the end, it was truly a wonderful evening’s entertainment. So watch out London, Lagos is the new West End!

The Associação de Dança de Lagos is due to perform again at the Cultural Centre of Lagos on May 31, June 1 and 2. For tickets, please call 282 770 450.

FUNDRAISER GARDEN PARTY

Meanwhile, a Grand Spring Garden Party is taking place on May 13 at a private chapel at Monte Arranzina in Espiche, from 3pm to 7pm, with proceeds going to the Associação de Dança de Lagos to help send 13 students to the World Dance Cup in Austria in June.

Under the slogan ‘Small acts of kindness’, the event offers a programme of light classical music provided by musicians from the Music Academy of Lagos and a dance performance by girls from the Associação de Dança de Lagos.

A raffle will also be held with three prizes of a meal for two at three local restaurants. A prize for the prettiest spring bonnet will also be on offer.

Entry tickets, including a buffet, will be sold at the gate – adults pay €10 and children €5. Entrance to the event is directly opposite the Espiche Campsite.
