PM and President at previous Infarmed meeting

“We’re close to the peak” of Portugal’s 4th wave, says expert

Reporting to the meeting of experts at Infarmed this morning – the first meeting of its kind in two months – Ana Paula Rodrigues of the public health institute Ricardo Jorge affirmed that Portugal is close to the peak of the latest (4th) wave of new coronavirus infections. “Rt (transmission) is approaching 1 which indicates we are close to the peak of the pandemic”, she said. “During the 2nd wave, this only happened when restrictive measures were imposed” (meaning lockdowns). Ms Rodrigues added that different regions are running with different levels of incidence. Right now, the regions with highest incidence are the north and Madeira – the latter which is starting to vaccinate children over the age of 12 from Saturday.
