Weekend weather: Temperatures soar. Beware African dust.

Portugal is in for some very hot weather this weekend, with temperatures set to go as high as 35ºC on Saturday (May 20).

Only Serra da Estrela and the Algarve are expecting maximums below the 30ºC mark, meteorologist Maria João Frada from the IPMA institute told Lusa news agency.

Forecasts also suggest clouds on Sunday, with the weather turning cooler on Monday, and increasing again on Tuesday.

IPMA warns the Algarve could once again be hit by a dust of cloud from northern Africa – with health officials warning “quality of air will be affected”.

Outdoor physical activities should be avoided or “reduced to a minimum”, while those who suffer from allergies and asthma should remain inside with windows closed if possible.
