Weekend weather: Summer begins with “heat boom”

Portugal is in for a blistering start to this year’s summer, with temperatures expected to rise above 30ºC throughout most of the country this weekend, according to forecasts from the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA).

Temperatures will be at their most sweat-inducing tomorrow (June 20), IPMA predicts, although summer only officially begins on Sunday.

The Alentejo region will suffer the most from the heat wave, with temperatures likely to reach 39ºC. Lisbon (35ºC) and Porto (33ºC) are also expecting sizzling temperatures, while the weather will be a bit milder in Faro (29ºC).

On Sunday, however, temperatures are expected to drop on average between 2ºC and 3ºC.
