Weekend weather: Rain returns after brief sunny spell

After an increase in temperatures that suggested that summer had finally arrived in Portugal, the country woke up to grey skies and rain on Friday morning and forecasts that the wet weather will continue until at least Saturday.

While temperatures are still high in many parts of the country, nearing the 40ºC mark in some inland and northern areas, nearly all of Portugal is covered by grey and heavy cloud.

According to Portugal’s Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA), the rainfall will continue into the weekend except in a few areas such as Lisbon and most of the Alentejo.

While the forecasts are excellent news for a country in dire need of rain, they are not as exciting for the multitudes of tourists currently enjoying a holiday in Portugal.

By Sunday, however, the weather is expected to have cleared up and temperatures are due to warrant a trip to the beach to cool off in the sea (19ºC in the Algarve), although it may be a bit windy.
