Weekend weather: Portugal prepares for heat wave

Another heat wave is expected to start today (July 3) in Portugal, with temperatures set to reach 35ºC and possibly higher in some areas of the Algarve, Alentejo and Central Portugal over the weekend and all through next week.

According to Portugal’s Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA), temperatures will increase on Sunday mostly in inland areas and will continue before it starts to cool down again next Thursday.

UV levels are also “very high”, and thus people are advised to use sunscreen and avoid extended exposure to the sun.

Meantime, Spain’s weather institute (AEMET) has launched a warning about the heat wave, saying temperatures are likely to reach 40ºC in many areas of the Iberian Peninsula.

It also warns that temperatures at night might reach 20ºC to 24ºC.
