Weekend airstrike cancelled at the 11th hour

An airport strike scheduled to run today, Saturday and Sunday (July 1-3) and threaten all national airports has been cancelled at the 11th hour following a meeting yesterday between the government and airport and aviation staff union SITAVA (click here).

The decision was made after the government agreed to withdraw a ruling that allowed a third baggage handling company to operate at Lisbon’s airport, union boss Fernando Henriques told Lusa news agency.

He believes a third operator would lead to “more lay-offs” in the sector and says that the new agreement “brings stability and hopes of a better future for the hundreds of handling employees” who face “precarious working conditions” in Portugal.

The government is also apparently preparing to create a “working group” dedicated specifically to dealing with the sector’s issues, claims Rádio Renascença.
