Weather due to worsen

THE INSTITUTE of Meteorology (IM) has placed 11 out of 18 districts on mainland Portugal under yellow alert as a result of the cold weather.

In Viana do Castelo, Braga and Bragança the IM said there was a good chance of snowfall. In the Azores, the islands of Corvo and Flores were placed under yellow alert due to extremely heavy rainfall. The remaining districts on yellow alert on mainland Portugal were all told to expect low temperatures, many of which were predicted to drop to below 0C.

Porto, Coimbra, Leiria, Santarém, Lisbon, Setúbal and Faro districts remain normal, at a green level. The IM announced that the temperature in Serra da Estrela, a popular ski destination, dropped to -6C temperature and could reach -7C.

Colder temperatures are expected throughout mainland Portugal.
