A report by environmental group WWF – World Wide Fund for Nature has shown Portugal to be the sixth worst country in the world in relation to water use and resource management.
Poor farming practices account for 82 per cent of the water consumption in Portugal and because this sector only contributes five per cent to the total of industry this is considered to be inefficient both economically and environmentally.
Afonso do Ó from the WWF said: “There is an urgent need for Portugal to become involved in responsible water management to ensure the protection and sustainability of natural resources.”
