A group of keen amateur cyclists from the UK will be travelling to the Algarve next month to take advantage of the warmer weather while enjoying the Tour of the Algarve cycle race.

Ron Stuart started to come to the Algarve to cycle as part of a family holiday, but this has now developed into a group of amateur enthusiasts with more than eight people involved in the trip and joint rides with the Lagos Road Bike Club when in the Algarve.

“With scenery to die for, wild flowers everywhere, orange and lemon trees galore, fantastic roads and serious climbs with sweeping descents, it is well worth considering the Algarve for a cycling holiday,” said cycling holiday organiser Ron Stuart.

He added: “We have found the western Algarve an ideal early season venue to build up for events with the Monchique and western coast rides giving us a great boost after a typical English winter.”

During the trip last year, Ron and his fellow cyclists were able to sample the highs and lows of the Tour of the Algarve first hand, observing some of the athletes performing at the highest level of cycling.

to be held between February 17 and 21, is set to see some big names hitting the roads of the region including Tour de France champion Alberto Contador and legendary cyclist Lance Armstrong.

“In 2010, there will be no competition from the Tour of California which means that there will be even more stars competing, so it will be possible to get up close to all the stars and their bikes while in the Algarve,” said Ron Stuart.

“Last year was the best ever tour in my opinion with fantastic weather and some of the best stages ever set.  We are hoping for a similar tour this February and, of course, are looking forward for our chance to see some champion cyclists.”
