Regular weekly Walking Football sessions for those over 50 years of age get underway at Browns Sports & Leisure Club on Tuesday, March 3, starting at 9.30am.
Earlier this week a dozen members of the Soccer Olhanense Strollers visited Browns to stage several exhibition games and introduce the sport to new members.
Like football fans the world over, those participating were “over the moon” at rediscovering the game they loved as players when they thought their glory days were behind them.
It is not just playing ‘old men’s’ five-a-side football because the game has been modified to make it safer and more inclusive, hence the reason for “walking” and “two touches”.
Biomechanically, walking is classed as having one foot on the ground – if both feet leave the ground, you are running. Therefore most people will be surprised at how fast the game actually moves. The health benefits the game produces include weight loss, improved mobility and balance, and obviously the feel good factor.
Remember that, at 50 years of age, you could be starting the next 30 years of your playing career. Proprietor of Browns, Alan Brown was delighted with the first session and intends to be a regular participant.
