Walking Football kicks off in Tavira

Monday (January 11) sees the much anticipated start of Walking Football in Tavira. The Municipal Stadium, near the Plaza Shopping Centre and opposite the site of the monthly market, is the venue with its 3G astro-turf being much kinder on knees and ankles.

Players must be over 50 years-of-age and if they have any health concerns should get clearance from their doctor.

The action starts at 9.30am with a gentle warm-up before participants get down to the serious business of playing a sport they thought had passed them by many years previously.

Organiser Chris Wright said: “This will be the fourth venue in the Algarve following the successful launch of Walking Football in Olhão 16 months ago. There has been much interest and we’re also hoping to attract players from over the border in Spain to the new venue.”

So if you want to give it a try, just turn up with suitable kit and trainers and join in. Even senior citizens in their 70s are enjoying a new lease of life thanks to the paced game that is taking Europe by storm.
