Walking Football goes west

Twelve months after the first Algarve Walking Football group started in Olhão, another is now starting up at the Boavista Golf & Spa Resort, near Lagos.

Prospective players are invited to ‘come-and-try-it’ when the group gets underway on Wednesday, September 16. The two-hour session, commencing at 9.30am, will take place on the immaculate grass football pitch adjoining the health club and restaurant.

Walking Football, a slow-paced version of the beautiful game aimed at the over 50s, is gaining tremendous popularity among those looking to keep an active lifestyle despite their age.

As the name suggests, Walking Football is non-contact and anyone that sprints, runs or jogs while the ball is in play will be penalised with a free-kick.

There is less stress on the body as there is no sudden change of direction or cutting movements. The game is still competitive and no one wants to be on the losing side. The benefits for this older age group are tremendous with a marked improvement in the cardiovascular fitness, joint mobility and co-ordination relating to position, motion and equilibrium.

Each session will cost €3. A one-off voluntary donation of €5 is requested towards the cost of equipment.
