Walkers collect abandoned dog from the streets

Residents, tourists and drivers in Tavira were amused to see dozens of walkers and their dogs taking part in a fundraising walk last Sunday that resulted in a stray dog being rescued from the streets.

The initiative by the 3AT – Tavira Animal Friends Association gathered animal lovers and their four-legged friends who walked along the banks of Gilão River raising awareness about the plea of stray animals and general animal welfare issues.

Nearly €300 was collected on the day through registration fees and the sale of t-shirts and hats, with the money going towards helping stray animals and improved rescue facilities.

A special participant at the walk was a stray dog that joined the group of walkers from the start and who was temporarily taken in by a member of the association.

The dog is now looking for a new home.
