Avid walkers have another date for their diaries – Sunday, October 20. It will be an opportunity to take in some of the stunning coastal scenery along Portimão while raising awareness about the importance of early cancer diagnosis during a charity walk between Alvor and Prainha.
Organised by the Portuguese League Against Cancer (LPCC), the walk will begin at 10am at the Alvor Sports Complex and be divided into two routes (6km and 9km).
This walk aims to ‘replace’ the Mamamaratona walk, which for many years was held in Portimão but has moved to Vilamoura.
Anyone can take part by buying their ticket online at blueticket.pt until October 17 (cost €5), which includes a bottle of water and a t-shirt to wear during the walk.
People can also sign up on the day of the event, although there may not be enough water bottles and t-shirts to go around for all.
The t-shirt and water kits can be picked up from the Portimão Gimnodesportivo pavilion on Thursday and Friday between 10am and 7pm or at the Alvor Sports Complex on Thursday and Friday between 10am and 7pm, on Saturday between 9am and 1pm and on the day of the event.
The walk is included in the list of events that will be taking place in October as part of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month initiative.
Mamamaratona next weekend
A week later, the Mamamaratona walk/race against breast cancer, which was first held in Silves and then moved to Portimão for many years, will take place for the first time in Vilamoura. It will be held on Sunday, October 27 as part of Loulé’s Algarve Tri Run 5.0.
The Mamamaratona will feature two routes – 4.5kms and 6.5kms – and is open to children as young as three and pensioners up to the age of 90 who can enjoy a “very pleasant walk whilst taking in the magnificent environment of one of the borough’s landmarks, the Vilamoura Marina”.
Loulé council says the event aims to “alert the community about the many campaigns that the Algarve Oncology Association organises in order to raise awareness about the importance of early cancer screenings and prevention”.
