Coimbra’s state hospitals are performing ophthalmic surgeries on Saturdays in order to reduce waiting lists.
The hospitals’ ophthalmology department annually record more than 85,000 appointments and more than 13,000 surgeries, 3,400 of these to treat cataracts.
By opening on Saturdays, the hospitals hope to perform more than 300 extra surgeries by the end of the year.
