A €2.3 million project to breathe new life into the southern part of Vila Real de Santo António with the construction of three new sports fields and a new retail area has been announced by the local council.
The plan is to replace the two existing sports fields which are badly rundown with new ones – one of them semi-covered. They will be equipped with locker rooms and stands, and the whole area will be revamped.
The project will also involve building a retail establishment to “tackle the lack of these kinds of establishments in the area”. Says VRSA council, it will create 40 direct jobs.
“This project will benefit not only the local population, but also clubs, associations and athletes who will be gaining new training grounds and headquarters with excellent conditions,” says VRSA mayor Conceição Cabrita.
A third sports field is due to be built in the area once the other works are completed, the council adds.
The works are expected to last four months.
