He was instrumental in bringing about ‘enormous tax increases’ for Portugal’s working folk and families, but this week he was smiling broadly for the newspapers which report that former finance minister Vítor Gaspar takes home a cool €23,000 every month tax free. The reason for this fortuitous fiscal break is that he is working for the IMF in Washington, USA, where he is “not considered resident”. Gaspar left Portugal this week after a stint evaluating the Bank of Portugal’s economic studies department.
