Vista restaurant wins Mesa Marcada gastronomy award

Portimão’s Vista restaurant also saw its pastry chef receive the Special Roastelier by Nescafé Pastry Chef Award.

The 15th edition of the Mesa Marcada Awards of the blog’s awards with the same name took place on Monday night at the Estoril Congress Centre. During the gastronomical star-studded night, Lisbon restaurant “Prado” was announced to be in first place on the Best Restaurant’s ranking, João Rodrigues was once again the favourite chef, and Portimão’s Vista restaurant won the Special Estrella Damm Highlight of the Year Award.

In this year’s edition, “Prado“, the restaurant led by António Galapito, reached first place after being second on the list of 10 favourites in 2020 and 2021.

Austrian Chef Hans Neuner’s “Ocean” (two Michelin stars), which ranked first last year, dropped one position in the ranking, which includes, as a new entry, “Cozinha das Flores” (Porto) by Nuno Mendes, in ninth place, and which received the Sogrape New Restaurant of the Year Special Award.

In turn, João Rodrigues (“Canalha“, in Lisbon, and itinerant project Residência) once again topped the list of favourite chefs – a position he held for six consecutive years when he headed “Feitoria” (Lisbon, one Michelin star).

Second on the list of chefs was Vasco Coelho dos Santos (“Euskalduna“, Porto, one Michelin star), who had come first last year.

Chef Rui Paula (“Casa de Chá da Boa Nova“, Leça da Palmeira, two stars), celebrating 30 years of career, received the Cutipol Career Special Award. This award had already been announced, as well as the Maria José Macedo Producer/Supplier of the Year 2023 Special Award, presented to the Herdade do Freixo do Meio (Montemor-o-Novo).

On the list of restaurants, one of the newest additions is “Vista” at the Bela Vista Hotel (Portimão, one Michelin star), by chef João Oliveira, which rose 12 positions to eighth place, earning the Special Estrella Damm Highlight of the Year Award. In the same restaurant, pastry chef Fábio Quiraz won the 2023 Special Roastelier by Nescafé Pastry Chef Award.

Chef Gil Fernandes (“Fortaleza do Guincho“, one Michelin star) rose 24 positions, reaching 16th in the general vote, earning him the Makro Special Award for Revelation Chef of the Year.

In the special awards categories, there are two “repeats”: “Comida Independente” by Rita Santos, in Lisbon, which once again won the Bom Sucesso Gastronomic Store of the Year Special Award (for the third time in a row), as well as the Chefs on Fire festival, from Lohad, by Gonçalo Castel-Branco, which won the Special Nutrifresco Gastronomic Event of the Year Award, just like last year.

This year’s edition, the biggest ever, featured new award categories “received with enthusiasm by the sector”: the Don Julio Bar of the Year Special Award, awarded to “Red Frog” by Paulo Gomes and Emanuel Minez, and the Johnnie Walker Special Award for Restaurant Bar of the Year, for “Rossio Gastrobar” (Hotel Altis Avenida), whose bartender is Flavi Andrade.

Service professionals are also included: the NX Store Service of the Year Special Award was handed to “The Yeatman” in Vila Nova de Gaia, led by Pedro Marques, while Daniel Silva (“Essencial“, Lisbon) received the Special S. Pellegrino/Acqua Panna Sommelier 2023 Award.

“Classic” restaurants, which have attracted loyal customers for at least 25 years, also deserve a distinction: in this edition, the Miele Classic Restaurant of the Year Special Award was awarded to the famous “Fialho” in Évora, now run by Helena and Rui Fialho, the late founder’s children.

Paula Amorim and Miguel Guedes de Sousa of the Amorim Luxury Group, owners of the JNcQUOI universe in Lisbon, received the NX Hotelaria Restaurant Entrepreneur 2023 Special Award.

The Studioneves Special Sustainability Award went to the “Vale Abraão” restaurant of the Six Senses Douro Valley Hotel (Samodães, Lamego) in the “Rural Environment” category and, in an “Urban Environment” to the “Em Carne Viva” restaurant (Porto ).

This was the largest edition of the Mesa Marcada awards, with 280 voters, an unprecedented number, including chefs and other professionals linked to the restaurant and hospitality industry, journalists and other communicators in the area, critics, bloggers and gastronomes, and attended by some 450 guests.
