Virtual museum a window to the Portuguese Discoveries

All you need to know about Portugal’s Golden Age of Discovery can now be found in a recently launched virtual museum – www.portaldescobrimentos.pt – promoted by the Algarve tourism board.
The website is the result of a project in cooperation with Spain, originally announced in 2012. Entitled “Descubriter –The European Route of Discoveries”, it aims to promote the culture, history and heritage of the Discoveries, its sea explorers and the maritime tradition of the Algarve and Andalusia.
The online museum includes documents, maps and suggested sites of interest about the Portuguese and Spanish maritime expeditions between the 15th and 17th centuries.
The Algarve tourism board is hoping the website will attract a new audience of potential visitors to the region.
“This portal is meant to be fun and educational but it also has a touristic purpose. We hope that by informing web users about the Discoveries, they will want to visit the Algarve and Andalusia, and learn more about the heritage associated to that era,” said tourism boss Desidério Silva.
Most of the website’s content has already been uploaded, but new information is expected to go up by the end of the year. Contents are available in Portuguese, Spanish and English and will later be translated into other languages to ensure it reaches out to an even wider audience.
